So, Alisan is not going to be objective about Randy. IMHO Randy has been useless on Idol for at least the last 2 seasons; he either has nothing to say or he acts like an asshat. But Alisan is not going to admit that.

I actually agreed with Randy last night. I love Broadway; it’s not about saying it’s “inferior”, it’s just saying that the person is putting on a bit of a character to sing (aka being ‘theatrical’), rather than just being themselves. If it’s TOO over the top, you worry that the person may not be able to connect emotionally with their listeners in the WAY THAT IDOL WANTS THEM TO. Maybe “Broadway” isn’t the right word, but it’s definitely a different sound and a different way of holding yourself when performing.
On the other hand, I totally agree with her re: what Steven said.

when has pop/rock not been theatrical? that’s why elton john, bowie, queen,kiss, michael jackson, madonna, gaga… so successful-not boring which most AI winners are and these artists can still connect with their audience through the music -elton john can still make me cry

Exactly. It’s when it’s TOO over the top that they lose the audience. I love theatrics and done well (like the way Adam does them) they are brilliant. Sadly, when you are first auditioning for Idol, and no one knows you and you’re singing acapella, it doesn’t always come across.

i’m really responding to Randy, who seems to think an over the top performer/singer doesn’t translate over to pop and obvs. they do. even in an audition where they seem over the top it shows they can “perform”

Randy’s not a moron; maybe he doesn’t express himself very well (dawg!) but I get what he was trying to say because I agreed with him and it’s not just about how the contestant sounded; it was the way he presented himself. He’s not saying you can’t be theatrical and be on Idol. I get it, but god forbid you think I’m a moron too.

Ms Buckley has a very valid point…Broadway will be around for another 100 years or so making a profit…record companies won’t…nor their big self inflated producers like Mr Jackson. The proof of this can be seen in the attempts of the recording industry to force nations around the world to pass harsh SOPA, PIPA like laws to control what can be shared on the internet. They are a sinking ship and musical artists don’t need them anymore. Today’s artists can DIY it.
Secondly Mr. Jackson’s most famous tirade against Broadway came after Adam Lambert’s AI performance of FEELING GOOD. It would behoove Mr. Jackson to simply go to YOUTUBE and type in Adam Lambert Feeling Good…the views for the top four videos are respectfully…771,087 views, then 372,924 views, then 299,992 views and in fourth place 125,563 views. These numbers added together probably slay the numbers of records Mr. Jackson has sold in the last ten years…and these are current numbers. It was TOO theatrical and a little TOO Broadway for Mr Jackson’s taste, but evidently resonates with music lovers all over the world…years and years after the actual event took place. If one were to combine the total number of views for Adam Lambert’s AI performances of Mad World, Whole Lotta Love,Tracks of My Tears, If I Can’t Have You, Ring of Fire, Black and White, and add them together as dollars he’d be worth more than TWO Idol judges combined.
Finally…I am tired of Randy Jackson dissin Broadway…when he couldn’t walk across the stage and deliver a stanza with out the aide of an oxygen mask, and medic with a wheelchair and a chili cheese dog from Sonic.
